MEDIATION PROGRAM

SMALL CLAIMS DIVISION OF THE COURT

Why mediate?

  • Avoids lengthy waits for decisions.

  • Solutions designed by both parties.

  • Avoids expense and collection procedures.

  • Confidential and avoids open court airing of disputes.

The magistrates of the small claims division handle a variety of cases.  They hear evictions, small claims, rent deposits, garnishments, replevins, revivor and second cause hearings.   This office is staffed by three part-time magistrates and two full-time support staff.   The mediators utilized by this division are unpaid volunteers that include students of Akron Law School and members of the Akron community.

PURPOSE

An alternative for litigants to resolve their disputes through a process of mediation. The mediators role is as a facilitator of communication not as a judge deciding right or wrong.

ELIGIBILITY

The monetary limit on small claims cases is $3,000.00.

SCHEDULE

Mediation sessions are held every Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
